Thanksgiving randoms
0- Tryptophan, present in turkey meat, is not the sole cause of drowsiness after eating a Thanksgiving meal.
- At 5:30 p.m., I saw people lining up outside several Best Buy store. These stores don’t open till 6 a.m. or so probably, so that’s at least 12 hours on the hard cement so that you can buy some new TV/computer/whatever. Wouldn’t you rather be at home with family?
- Rick Astley performed his revived hit song, “Never Gonna Give You Up.” Rickrolling is more than a year old, people should let it die now. Seriously. Give it up.
- This was my last big American meal for a while.
Japan, here I come!
Holidays be approaching
0With the holidays approaching, it’s a busy time of year. This year, it’s even more busy than usual. This week I’ll be spending Thanksgiving with some family in the area, then I’ll be heading out to Japan for a week to see some friends. During the week I’m gone, my parents shall move down to Panama.
So yes, Japan. The day is almost here. I still don’t know what I’ll do when I’m there, or what I may buy to bring back. Guess I’ll figure it out soon enough.
MRE – much repulsive eating
0
A few weeks ago I visited my cousins for a night. We hung out, had some food, chatted, played some games. Then back at their place they showed me a case of MREs they received back when Hurricane Ike struck the area. I had never seen one in person before, so we opened one up to look at the various things it comes with.
Pics of the contents, and the cooked meal, can be seen by clicking the thumbnail image here or this link.
Containing roughly 1,100 calories, this rare delicacy contained a beef enchilada, refried beans, Nesté instant coffee, an M&M cookie, non-dairy creamer, sugar, crushed red pepper, two vegetable crackers, picante sauce, cheese spread, gum, napkin, spoon, matches, “beverage base power orange” (a.k.a., Tang), and various other things. My cousins generously gave me this one, and I made it my goal to cook one up and post about it here.
An experimental week
0This past weekend I visited my cousins on the outskirts of Houston. As I was leaving, they handed me a military-issue MRE. Beef enchilada to be exact.
On Sunday I was going through boxes of old junk and came across a 9-year-old pack of Pokégum.
I now believe I have an experiment in waiting for me this week. I’ll make sure to document the process of cooking up the enchiladas and consuming of the gum.
Living on the edge of the mirror

The Mirror’s Edge demo came out last week. Now, this is a came I’ve been excited about since it was first unveiled last year. Well, I finally got a chance to get some time hands-on, and if the rest of the game is as good as the demo, EA will have won itself back into my heart.
ME combines aspects of free running and parkour in a somewhat dystopian society in the future. “Runners,” athletic couriers, exist and try to remain out of society to help deliver message. So the demo has you go through some basic training and then has you make one delivery. So just how fun is jumping from rooftops, kicking open doors and running from the man? It’s quite fun.
