Beginning the journey in Japan

Other than a drive from Houston to Nacogdoches, and a flight from Houston to Japan, I really have not had much chance to relax. The past month or so has been a blur. Things I’ve had to do include:

  • Work on visa paperwork so I can stay in Japan longer than 90 days
  • Finish up work at the old job
  • Pack, clean and sell stuff
  • Meet with friends for lunches and dinners

For my trip, I had been debating whether or not to upgrade my flight on Continental from economy to BusinessFirst.  I’m glad I did, and here’s why. I had three checked bags, a carry-on and a briefcase. The checked bags fees were as follows:

  • Every checked bag after the first, free bag (up to 50 lbs): $50
  • Each bag between 50 – 70 lbs: $100

My bags included one 35 lb bag, one 61 and one 62 lb. That would’ve been $300 or so in bag fees! My upgrade was $500 + 25,000 mile or something, so I opted for that. If I hadn’t, I would’ve been in a middle seat for the 14-hr flight. And I may not have sat next to the cute girl who kept me company. Continue reading Beginning the journey in Japan

It won’t take this long again, I promise!

June 2009 when I was getting ready to leave for Japan and Korea is when I last posted. Now, Feb. 25, 2009, I am getting ready to make another trip to Japan, but this time to move there. It’s pretty crazy.

In the meantime I’ve made another trip to Panama (those pics will be coming, I swear!), gotten a job in Japan and more. As soon as I get internet in Japan at my apartment, I’ll begin posting regularly (my goal is once a week) with lots of pictures.

I’ve gone ahead and paid for an account with SmugMug, so I won’t have to manage the gallery anymore on my own, though that will still stay live on this site for the time to come. And now it’s unlimited photo storage!

I keep coming back

I’ve never been one for the bar or club scene.  It’s always seemed odd to me to have a few drinks, go up to someone, grind against them, then leave with never exchanging a word. Maybe that’s just because I’ve never actually done that. Typically, I have a drink or two, sit in the back with some buddies and chat.  And I can do that at home for a lot less money.

However, this past weekend some friends and I went to a bar that I enjoyed.  The atmosphere was nice, attractive, single women appeared to be plentiful, and my mojito was one the best I’ve ever had.  I do hope I can return.  There establishment has a location not far from where I live, so I may have to see if it has the same ambience as the one I went to near my friends’ house.

And unless I’m ever taught how to properly dance something other than the waltz, foxtrot and Thriller, you won’t still won’t see me out on a dance floor.

Joyous holiday season

Just kidding, Merry Christmas.

Last week, company joined my roommate and I.  My mom visited for four nights, his g/f came to town (and is here for another week), and we had some friends over during the weekend.  We ate tons of food and played plenty of games.

The roommate and his g/f cooked up some delicious Korean food Tuesday night.  Some bulkoki and some other dishes were prepared.  Plenty was served up, so there were leftovers for a few days.

My mother and I went out to a Polish restaurant here in Houston.  From the outside, it looks a little shady; however, the inside is quite nice, and very warm.  While I’ve never been to Europe, nor do I have any desire to venture there, the interior felt very homey and very European.  Most people there, staff and patrons alike, spoke the native tongue, and most people seemed to know each other.  My mother is of Polish descent–though not first generation–so it seemed familiar to some places she’s visited and grown up in.  And as a bonus to this, Polish Christmas carols were playing on the radio.

I not be dead

Of course it would happen.  I say I plan to update, then life gets in the way and my planned updates get forgotten.  See, as soon as I returned from Japan, I became swamped at work.  But now it’s slow again for a few weeks, so I have time to not think about work.

The holidays are here. Oh, and yes, the sky is going to be blue tomorrow.  I may be stating the obvious, but these things make me happy.  This year, however, the holiday season has snuck up quicker than in years past.  For myself, anyway.  Last year I waited with bated breath for winter to arrive.  This year, I haven’t really given it any thought.

Perhaps I was just too busy this autumn to realize the days were coming to an end for 2008.   My dad’s wedding, a trip to Japan, and a few other things here and there.  But I’m sure there were just as many things going on last year in my life, though perhaps not of the same magnitude.  Or maybe it’s because it’s been so fucking hot here.  On Dec. 20, the high here in my area of Houston got to about 75 degrees.  And you know what?  Tomorrow it’s going to be 46 or so.  The weather in the past two weeks have been pretty screwy.  I mean, we had snow already.

Yes, I said it was hot, and then I mentioned snow.  Let me clarify.  Other than the cold front then and the one coming tomorrow, it’s been about or so here the past month or so, and it sucks.  Hence my distaste for Houston, let alone Texas.  The weather is completely random.

Anyway, this week shall be enjoyable, damn it.  Here at Casa Dufus, I shall play host to a gathering of old Pine Loggers from my college days.  Then my mother shall visit for a few days, which will be the real treat.  And that’s not sarcasm.
